Sunny Bak is an American photographer born in Manhattan of Chinese-Indonesian and Korean parents. She began her photography career at the age of 12 as a child paparazzi shooting and selling her photographs of the celebrities, actors and dancers on Broadway.By the age of 17 she opened her first studio on Broadway and 18th Street in Manhattan, while attending City-As-School, the first alternative public high school in the US. At this time, she also studied photography under the legendary Philippe Halsman at The New School for Social Research in Manhattan. A storied career shooting fashion and celebrity portraits followed, but she is best known for her photography with The Beastie Boys and her famous Newsweek ‘Lesbian’ Cover, from 1993, which is still one of their top ten selling issues.
