Yarn Bombing: A form of street art and public intervention in which knitted or crocheted textile — typically in bright, saturated color — is wrapped around or applied to urban infrastructure: lampposts, benches, trees, statues, vehicles, and buildings. Yarn bombing emerged in the early 2000s in the United States and spread globally as a practice that claimed public space through a material — domestic handcraft — historically coded as feminine, private, and non-threatening. Its visual effect is one of radical defamiliarization: the unexpected softness of textile against hard urban surfaces reframes both the material and the environment it occupies. Yashica: A Japanese camera manufacturer founded in 1945, best known for its twin-lens reflex cameras — particularly the Yashica-Mat series — and its 35mm rangefinders. Yashica TLR cameras use a medium format 6×6cm frame; their dual-lens design (one for viewing, one for exposing) and mechanical simplicity make them accessible entry points to medium format analog photography. The Yashica Electro 35 rangefinder, with its fast 45mm f/1.7 lens, remains sought after by street photographers for its low-light capability and compact form. YBA (Young British Artists): A loose generation of British artists who first exhibited together in the landmark Freeze exhibition organized by Damien Hirst in a London docklands warehouse in 1988 — and who dominated international art world attention through the 1990s. Hirst's spot paintings and shark-in-formaldehyde vitrines, Tracey Emin's confessional installations, Sarah Lucas's crude object assemblages, Chris Ofili's elephant dung paintings, and the Chapman Brothers' disturbing figurative sculpture collectively used shock, accessibility, and deliberate bad taste as artistic strategies against both academic tradition and the earnestness of the previous generation. Charles Saatchi's patronage and the Turner Prize provided the commercial and institutional infrastructure around which the movement coalesced. Their lasting influence is on the entrepreneurial model of art-making: the YBAs demonstrated that artists could organize their own exhibitions, build their own markets, and drive their own critical reception without waiting for institutional permission. Yellowing: The progressive discoloration of archival paper, oil paint varnishes, photographic emulsions, and adhesives over time — producing a warm yellow-brown shift that degrades color accuracy and tonal relationships. Yellowing is caused by two primary mechanisms: UV light exposure, which breaks down paper fibers and photographic dyes; and acidic off-gassing from lignin-containing materials (wood-pulp paper, cardboard backings, acidic adhesives) that migrate into adjacent materials. For fine art photography and prints, prevention requires museum-quality framing using acid-free mats, UV-filtering glazing, and archival mounting materials — combined with storage away from light, heat, and humidity. Yellow Filter: In black-and-white film photography, a yellow filter absorbs blue and violet light — darkening blue skies and lightening yellows and greens relative to their unfiltered tonal rendering. The effect produces a more natural-looking sky-to-cloud contrast than a direct unfiltered exposure, in which blue sky and white clouds often appear at similar tonal values. Yellow filters are the mildest of the contrast filters used in black-and-white landscape and documentary photography; orange and red filters produce progressively stronger darkening of the sky. Understanding filter effects on tonal relationships was a foundational part of black-and-white photographic craft in the film era and remains relevant in digital black-and-white conversion. Young Turks: A colloquial designation for a generation of younger artists, critics, or practitioners who challenge, disrupt, or seek to displace an established older generation within a field — named after the early 20th-century Ottoman reform movement. In art historical usage, the Young Turks of one generation typically become the establishment the next generation's Young Turks revolt against: the Abstract Expressionists were Young Turks in relation to the American Scene painters; the YBAs were Young Turks in relation to the British art establishment of the 1980s. Yves Klein: A French artist (1928–1962) whose brief but extraordinarily concentrated practice produced some of the most philosophically ambitious and formally distinctive work of the 20th century. Klein is most closely associated with monochrome painting — and specifically with International Klein Blue (IKB), a saturated ultramarine pigment suspended in a synthetic resin binder that he patented in 1960 and used exclusively in a series of identically colored canvases that propose pure color as the total content of a painting. His Anthropometries — large canvases made by pressing and dragging models covered in IKB paint across the surface while an orchestra performed — treated the human body as a living brush. Klein died of a heart attack at 34; his influence on Minimalism, Conceptual Art, performance, and the philosophy of color in visual art has grown continuously since.
