Bela Lugosi (1882-1956): Because the horror genre was taken less seriously than drama, comedy, or even Westerns, Bela Lugosi was not acknowledged as the classically trained actor he was in his native Hungary. His Broadway success as the vampire Dracula led to a hit movie, but he never received the career boost that should have come with it. Bela said: “Circumstances made me the theatrical personality I am, which many people believe is also a part of my personal life.”
