Fred Astaire (1899-1987): Astaire was the original show-business hyphenate, the consummate actor-singer-dancer. No performer had more songs written for him by Cole Porter and George Gershwin. Working with choreographer Hermes Pan and partner Ginger Rogers, Astaire introduced the intimate dance number to the screen. Fred once said: “I just tried to entertain.”
