Domestic Animals

Theodosia Marchant | Domestic Animals: Life In 16 Frames

Selections from Theodosia's Solo Exhibition at FATHOM

"This series came about from something I’d read that intrigued me. It proposed that we are constrained by chemistry; that free will is the rationalization of our unconscious. Philosophically, if we cannot control our emotions, are we imprisoned by them? I wanted to use my figures to realize this world and to create an environment in which to understand these reflexes.

In the course of the narrative, we observe my subjects drawn together, at first unconsciously, then in learned behavior, seeking empathy and identification as a group. Inevitably, there is conflict and they are torn apart, each of them microscopically imperfect machines, whose chaotic interactions must equally attract or repel. In the final scenes I hope to deduce a greater direction to the evolution. While our differences dictate a state of flux, the more pressing commonalities eventually foster greater empathy and understanding. Just as individual groups or families coalesce and break up, new ones form and in sum, we grow closer together."
