"These photographs are the culmination of two summers traveling the American west with acclaimed photographer Richard Avedon. When we weren’t working Avedon encouraged us to take photographs and write about our adventures. Making photographs of this new frontier was paramount to my overall experience. When would I ever return here? Probably never.
The title Beyond W. 4th St. originated from when I was offered the studio assistant job in late 1982. I was reluctant. I was a wild and young and this was a serious commitment. The studio manager said that I would be traveling the blue highways of the western United States to complete the seminal book In the American West. Being a kid from New York City the furthest west side I’d been was 4th Street. I took the job and never looked back."
