Activist, musician, freedom fighter, Peter Tosh was one of the true original Rastafarians. Founding member of legendary reggae band The Wailers, Tosh was driven from an early age to succeed, not just in music, but also in a counter culture dedicated to fighting injustices observed in his country of Jamaica by European imperialism. Tosh’s music reflects a more aggressive and perhaps darker side of the reggae genre, instead of preaching peace, love, and harmony, thematic staples of most reggae music at the time, Tosh made direct calls to action against oppression and disenfranchisement throughout the world. As Tosh’s music continues to inspire inner strength and hope for mankind, there is no doubt that its spirit will live on as a promise of a better version of society somewhere near on the horizon.
