Project Strata re-examines the art of portraiture through creative collaborations between artists from different disciplines and the subjects themselves. The subjects being individuals who’ve made their mark in their own endeavors — music, sports, film, fashion and other components of American culture. These are the people who have moved the needle, changed the game.
We start with the premise that humans indeed are complex and multi layered and the best way to create a portrait is to capture the energy between those layers. A Project Strata Portrait is not necessarily figurative art but draws from the essence of a photo or painting, then adds in the talents of another artist. It could be a poet, painter, designer, writer. We’re not just open, but excited to explore the possibilities.
The most important layer or piece of the puzzle is the subject themselves. We approach this layer from their perspective of what lessons have they learned from their personal journey. Starting with discovering their life’s work to reaching the pinnacle of their professions. This message is distilled and incorporated into the final portrait. In some cases it can take the form of advise to a younger version of themselves, or explaining a hard lesson learned, or advice to future generations. Each collaboration between the artist and the subject will find its own path to expression. The essence of the person, felt within the layers of the artwork.
