Curator's Note: Trained under Czech landscape master Julius Mařák at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts, Ľudovít Čordák (1864–1937) spent his career painting the countryside and market towns of Central Europe with an impressionist's eye for mood and atmosphere. View of Spišská Nová Ves (c. 1900–1920) is characteristic of his finest work — a sun-filled road lined with tall poplars draws the eye toward the town's distant rooftops and church steeple, the whole composition held together by a lyrical sense of light filtering through the canopy. Čordák remained stylistically uncompromising throughout his life, and that commitment reads clearly here: this is landscape painting that trusts the subject.
