Clarence Sinclair Bull

Clarence Sinclair Bull (1896-1979) is known as the primary photographer of Greta Garbo, with whom he created a series of near-mystical images. In truth, Bull was better known in his time as the manager of a factory-like photography studio and laboratory. That it was located in the heart of Hollywood’s most prosperous and influential movie studio was incidental to Bull’s concern that it be run along strictly scientific and economic lines. Thus, the M-G-M galleries and photo lab were the most consistently excellent in the industry. Bull’s portrait work was equally excellent, making a smooth transition from the creamy diffusion of the 20s to the Art-Deco glamour of the 30s to the crisp elegance of the 40s and even to the strobe-lit accessibility of the 50s.
