Whitey Schafer

A.L. (“Whitey”) Schafer was head portrait photographer at Columbia Pictures from 1935 (succeeding the late William Fraker), where until 1941, he created glowing portraits of such diverse types as Gary Cooper, Peter Lorre, and Irene Dunne. With Robert Coburn, he turned Rita Hayworth into a star. When a power shift at Paramount pushed Eugene Richee out, Schafer took his place and continued his work with Veronica Lake, Paulette Goddard, Ray Milland, Alan Ladd, Betty Hutton, and Dorothy Lamour. He was working with Elizabeth Taylor at the time of his death in 1952 from a boating accident.
