SONIC 2.0: Noise & Vision is a dialogue between a captured moment and its reinterpretation — an exhibition that examines how photographic records of popular music accumulate new meaning when seen through a contemporary artistic lens. Working from an archive of images spanning more than four decades, Sel applies his practice of composite reinterpretation — layering, recoloring, and reconstructing source imagery into new visual statements that unite two traditions that share more than they differ. Rock photography and street art were both born outside the gallery, one from the pit and one from the wall, and his work makes that kinship impossible to ignore.
The exhibition traces a broad arc of music and culture: Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, The Who, Bob Marley, Joan Jett, Black Flag, Henry Rollins, Minor Threat, the Circle Jerks, Bad Brains, the Ramones, LL Cool J, Stone Temple Pilots, Fishbone, Circa Survive, the Melvins, and Idles.
Developed in collaboration with photographers Jeffrey Mayer, Kevin Salk, Richard Abagon, Allison Braun, Drew Carolan, Fabrice Henssens, and George Ortiz. Several works make their public debut at the pop-up exhibition and will be available for acquisition at the show.
