Sunny Bak is an American photographer whose storied career began at the astonishing age of twelve. Armed with her father's Nikon, she navigated the Broadway theater circuit as a child paparazzi. She successfully sold candid shots of major celebrities to prominent magazines before she even graduated. By seventeen, Bak had opened her own Manhattan studio while studying under legendary portraitist Philippe Halsman. Her space quickly became a nexus for New York's burgeoning 1980s pop, punk, and hip-hop scenes. Bak's lens captured everyone from a pre-fame Madonna to the Beastie Boys. She ultimately provided the iconic gatefold image for their multi-platinum album Licensed to Ill, and even hosted the "Fight For Your Right" music video shoot in her workspace. Beyond music, she is celebrated for shooting the historic 1993 Newsweek cover highlighting lesbian couples, which remains one of the publication's top-selling issues. Now based in Venice Beach, California, Bak continues to produce culturally resonant portraiture.
