Sunny Bak is an American photographer, born in Manhattan to Chinese-Indonesian and Korean parents. She started at twelve — a child paparazzi shooting and selling pictures of the celebrities, actors, and dancers on Broadway. By seventeen she had her own studio, on Broadway at 18th Street, while attending City-As-School, the first alternative public high school in the US. She also studied under Philippe Halsman at The New School for Social Research. Fashion and celebrity portraiture followed. But Bak is best known for her photographs of the Beastie Boys and the 1993 Newsweek 'Lesbians' cover — still one of the magazine's ten best-selling issues.
