Company History
Although our current gallery and publishing operations began in 2014, our roots date back several decades to the late 1970’s. After long runs in the marketing and entertainment industries, the company’s founders started a second career in the art business when they formed a partnership with the legendary art publisher Edward Weston in 2000 and shortly after that a brief partnership with The Andrew Weiss Gallery in Beverly Hills.
In 2001 the company started to publish art prints of vintage pop culture, selling on-line through a long gone website (pop-arts-iconix). The work included film, music, and pulp fiction graphics. We still have a deep archive and love of this genre of art and graphic design.
In 2009 FATHOM opened its first printing facility with the help of another legend Bill Swann, a pioneer in the digital printing business. Located in the west end of Culver City, next to Marina Del Rey, we began printing fine art, photography, catalogues, books, notecards and writing journals for museums, art publishers and galleries. That same year we started working with the creative team at SceneFour and are proud of our small involvement with their creative vision and the birth of a new art medium they developed called Rhythmic Expressionism, collaborative art with world class recording artists.
By 2014 we were ready to open another gallery and got our feet wet when partnered again with Andrew Weiss, opening the first FATHOM Gallery at the Bergamot Station Art Center in Santa Monica. In 2015, art galleries were heading east to a revitalized Downtown Los Angeles. We followed, opening a new gallery in the Lobby of the California Market Center. It’s here that we began a current publishing program, signing publishing contracts with contemporary artists and mounting mounting a series solo and group art exhibitions.
When Cal Mart was sold in 2018, we moved back to the westside and opened a gallery on Wilshire Blvd. in the Brentwood section of Los Angeles. Live exhibitions in the gallery were paused when the pandemic hit. Since then FATHOM has experimented with alternative outdoor venues, and festival settings.
We are currently hanging shows back in our Wilshire location. Our art studio is located in Santa Monica and we are currently exploring alternative spaces for larger gallery shows and large scale traveling exhibitions.
