Description

Los Angeles Street Photography | Commemorative Edition

A worker cleans a billboard at La Cienega and Stocker in the Baldwin Hills section Los Angeles.  The photo appeared on the Miscellany Page of  Life Magazine on June 30, 1958, and was republished in the hardback The Best of Life.

Speed Graphic Camera, 4X5 sheet film, natural light

Publisher’s Note: What I love about this shot, beyond the joke, is how clearly it shows two things I look for in any documentary photograph: anticipation and timing. Garry saw the scene unfolding as he drove down La Cienega. He pulled over, set up quickly and waited for the exact moment the brush crossed over the nose. Those half-seconds are what make a photograph great, that and knowing when you’re actually in the right place. — Francis Coiro, Founder, FATHOM
