Dorothy Dandridge

Dorothy Dandridge (1922-1965):  She was not the first African-American actress to play something other than a servant, but Dorothy Dandridge was the first to receive a Best Actress nomination, yet her career faltered due to a lack of appropriate roles. Dandridge once said "Carmen Jones (1954) was the best break I`ve ever had. But no producer ever knocked on my door.  There just aren`t that many parts for a black actress.”
