Jesse Fischer (American, b. [year]) has been photographing punk from inside it for more than four decades. He started at thirteen in Northern California, documenting his local skate and punk scene for two zines he cut, pasted, and photocopied himself — Skate/Punk Mag in 1983, Slime Zine in 1984. The training that followed was hands-on: darkroom work at Thrasher Magazine that turned into a staff photographer job there in 1991, then a move to Los Angeles in 1994 as Art Director and Photographer at Epitaph Records. Fischer works both sides of the record cover. He shoots the photograph and designs the object it ends up on — the layout, the type, the sleeve — for Rancid, NOFX, Pennywise, and Bad Religion, among others. Rancid's ...And Out Come the Wolves (1995) is his best-known cover, and it is entirely his: his photograph, his design. His work has run in Rolling Stone, Spin, The New Yorker, and NME, and his subjects range from Motörhead and the Ramones to Merle Haggard and Wayne Kramer. In 2024, the Punk Rock Museum in Las Vegas presented his solo exhibition Photohead. Fischer studied at San Francisco City College and the Art Institute, and lives and works in Los Angeles.
