NATIVE EYE

In 1994 a conversation with Avedon sent Carolan back into his own early street negatives — work he had shot in the seventies and eighties and shelved. What he found there became *NATIVE EYE | New York City in the Late 20th Century*: children cooling off in fire hydrants in the summer of 1975, a Checker cab off duty on a wet street in 1982, anonymous faces on the Lower East Side. The book runs 225 pages and 150 photographs, with contributions from Chung Wong, Eugene S. Robinson, Lee Quinones, Patti Astor, Dante Ross, and Harley Flanagan. David Duchovny, who grew up on the Lower East Side, called it a time machine.

Large-format prints from the series are published in signed limited editions.

Drew Carolan's Native Eye Is like a Time Machine taxi driven by the sharpest cabby in the 5 boroughs. I grew up on the lower east side so his images are uncanny to me, embodying moments I've long forgotten and/ or never experienced, like the dreams of a long lost brother. I have seen what he has seen, but he has captured what was fleeting in judicious frames both loose and deftly chosen. He captures moments in time I know exist no more.
