Head tipped back and eyes raised, Maynard James Keenan of Tool holds a Steinberger guitar upside down against his body, palms pressed together around the neck as if in prayer. The headless instrument stands where a cross might be, its angular body sitting just under his chin, the strings running down between his hands. Shot in black and white against solid black, the light falls on his face, arms and white ribbed tank top, with long dark hair spilling over his shoulders and a ring on each hand catching the light. It's a devotional pose built from rock-and-roll materials, part icon painting, part stage performance, held perfectly still.
