Gleb Derujinsky

Gleb Derujinsky Jr.  (1953 - 2011) | Photographer and Filmmaker

Gleb was raised in a home dedicated to the arts. His father Gleb Derujinsky Sr. was a renowned sculptor, and his mother, Alexandra Micholoff Derujinsky, a classic pianist. By the  age of 6 Gleb’s life long passion for photograph blossomed as he began to  shoot, develop and print his own photographs. At 15 he became the youngest member of the famed New York Camera Club where he met and was influenced by the legendary photographers in the club including Edward Steichen and Alfred Stieglitz.

Professional Background:

After serving in World War II, Gleb returned to New York and opened his own photography studio. In 1948 he landed his first cover for COLLIER’S and was soon retained by HARPER’S BAZZAR; working alongside Richard Avedon and Lillian Bassman. Gleb gained a reputation for his creative compositions and placing the models in real-world settings — a photographic style that foreshadowed the age of supermodels.

In the late 1960’s he became an award winning commercial director working with major brands such as Union Carbide, Johnson & Johnson, and Texas Instruments.  After a brief sting in Los Angeles Gleb reinvented himself in mid 1970’s  and moved to Durango, Colorado. There he found a new passion, designing jewelry, as well as serving a glider instructor and youth ski instructor.

Over the next 40 years in Durango, Gleb continued refining his skill as an image maker, shooting landscapes, ghost towns and street scenes; leaving a stunning archive of never seen photographs. A selection of Gleb's fashion photographs are in the permanent collection of the Getty Museum, and new portfolios of his later work are in development.
