A Robert Landau photograph of the rooftop archways at Griffith Observatory in Los Feliz, designed by John C. Austin and Frederick Ashley and completed in 1935. The image isolates a sequence of three arched openings ornamented with the Greek meander (key) pattern.

Curator's Note: Three arches in succession, each framed inside the last. The foreground opening is the largest; through it, a second arch is visible; through that, a third — smaller still, with a sliver of distant sky beyond. Late golden light rakes across the smooth stucco, throwing shallow shadow under each keystone and rendering the meander frieze in low relief. The deep cobalt of the sky punches through every opening. What Landau finds here is a study in repetition with diminishment — the kind of compositional moment a painter might labor for and a photographer needs only the right hour and the right vantage to capture.
